The easy way to book a reliable London 'Man with a Van'

Moving Day Safety Tips

Whether it's unexpectedly putting your back out or tripping over a stray flower pot, it's easy to overlook some of the basic steps to keep safe on the moving day, so time for a recap.

Moving Boxes

Although your main focus is always going to be on the actual logistics of moving home, such as the packing and leaving your home in a clean state so you can hopefully get your deposit back, it's definitely worth considering safety on the moving day.

So if you're planning on assisting with the move let's take a look.

Get some gloves

Most Movers use gloves because they give you a better grip on all kinds of things, including boxes. Standard rigger gloves work well, or if you can find some with a grippy texture even better. They also protect your hands from any unnecessary minor cuts.

It's just way more efficient to wear gloves when handling boxes and all the rest, they protect your hands and give you that grab power you want, no matter what you're picking up.

Wear comfortable loose clothing

You don't want to feel restricted by tight jeans or whatever, especially with stairs involved, so try and dress accordingly so you have a free range of movement. Think of it as a work out, as that's basically what it is most of the time.

Would you go the gym wearing a tight pair of jeans and a freshly ironed shirt? No, of course not.. so put you're old comfy stuff on and expect to sweat bucket loads in the summer (depending on the move and whether you've hired an extra pair of hands).

Watch where you're going

That might sound strange but when there are obstacles all over the place and other hazards it's easy for accidents to happen. Just be hyper vigilant of what's going on in your surroundings at all times, ninja style.

One thing to watch out for is half opened boxes which can be surprisingly dangerous when you bend forward to pick them up. The paper/card can be sharp and you don't want to catch your eye on it. We could say maybe wear some goggles as well, but that's probably taking things a bit too far. Just exercise caution at all times.

Use appropriate footwear

You don't want to be wearing a heavy pair of clogs for example, and steel toe cap shoes would be overkill, but trainers are fine and ideal for moving swiftly up and down those stairs if need be. If there's stairs involved and you're planning on helping, you most definitely want to be wearing light trainers type footwear.

Watch your back

Last but not least is lifting correctly, because you want to avoid back injury at all costs. It's advisable to warm up and do some stretching about 30 mins before the move. Practice some squats to get you into the habit of keeping your back straight when lifting. And remember the golden rule of moving... don't overfill the boxes (usually with books) so they weigh a tonne.

That's about it for now, mostly it's common sense but easy to forget in all the commotion of the day.

Happy moving!
