The Best Places to Look for A Professional House Share in London

Moving to London for the first time can be daunting. With so many locations to choose from, even picking North or South of the river can be an excruciating task. The majority of people moving to London alone for work will start out in a house share.

Row of houses

A house share is ideal for professionals for so many reasons, including:

  • It’s cheaper than choosing a studio or one bedroom apartment
  • House shares are plentiful in the London area, so you’ll have lots of choice
  • You split the bills, so it works out a lot cheaper
  • You split the cleaning duties, or you may split the cost of a cleaner – bonus!
  • You will get to enjoy living in a larger house
  • It’s a very easy way to meet people, which can be difficult when you’re new to an area

Some house shares will be arranged informally between the existing tenants, which makes it easier to move in and out at a time to suit you. So, if you decide you want to explore a new area, you may be able to end your contract early if you can find someone to replace you.

The average cost of renting a room in London has been increasing dramatically over the years. In 2017, the average London room would set you back around £781 per month. This has now increased to £902 in 2019. Competition is also fierce, so if you find a place you love, don’t be afraid to snap it up!

We’ve helped many people move in and out of house shares over the years. In this time, we’ve discovered some of the best places for professional house shares over the years. Read on to discover our top picks…

Isle of Dogs

For easy access to the City, Isle of Dogs is perfect. People flock to the area for the luxury high rise apartments, river views and excellent transport links. The Canary Wharf Underground Station will get you to Waterloo on the Piccadilly line in just 12 minutes. You’ll also have 8 Docklands Light Railway stations to choose from.

Bermondsey

Head South of the river and you’ll find the borough of Bermondsey. If you want lots of things to do right on your doorstep, then Bermondsey is a great option. You’ll find an abundance of shops, bars, restaurants, art galleries, theatres and more. And for when you need to get to work, you’ll be close to the Northern Line, Jubilee Line and the Thames Clipper.

Camden

Mention you’re moving to Camden and Londoners might roll their eyes, but there’s plenty of charm to be found in this bustling borough. It might have its fair share of cliches, but Camden is emerging as a viable option for young professionals who want to be close to the action. Considering you can take a leisurely stroll and be in the centre of the West End in about half an hour, this could also help you save on transport and a gym membership.

Maida Vale

Perhaps the poshest place on our list, Maida Vale offers upmarket restaurants, plenty of cafes, and some quite simply stunning architecture. You could be living in a period property without the eye-watering price tag associated with buying in the area. It’s also close to Paddington Station, Bakerloo Line, Jubilee Line and Circle/Hammersmith and City Lines. Maida Vale is already pretty green and leafy, but you’ll also be within walking distance of Regent’s Park.

Fulham

If you want an exclusive postcode without the exclusive prices, then Fulham could be the perfect match, Nestled between Chelsea and Putney, Fulham sits alongside the Thames in South West London. Fulham is popular with affluent families thanks to the larger homes and great schools. Football fans will also be spoilt for choice with Chelsea and Fulham both calling the area home.

Wandsworth

If you’re looking for a true bargain, look for your professional house share in Wandsworth. It doesn’t attract the hipster crowd, which means this area is still very affordable. You’ll be close to Wandsworth Common, Clapham Common and Battersea, so you won’t be short of outdoor space. Perhaps the best bit about Wandsworth is that there are lots of little areas and each one feels like a real community.
