Do Movers Take Apart and Reassemble Furniture?

Whether movers are willing to dismantle and put back furniture together again as part of the service is a question that's often hot on the minds of many moving customers, and as usual it depends on a few things. So let's take a deep dive and find out what the situation is on the ground when it comes to taking apart beds, sofas or whatever other furniture needs dismantling and reassembling.

Mover taking apart some furniture

Do Movers Pack your Belongings for You

First up, before you've even started with the dismantling furniture situation, you need to decide if you want your stuff to be packed into boxes by your movers. This is normally an add-on for those that really like the premium type service where they can almost treat a move like just another day at the office so to speak.

Most people seem to prefer boxing up their personal belongings themselves but if you're looking for that all inclusive don't lift a finger type of move, then it's worth shopping around as there are movers who will pack everything up for you.

Do Movers Provide Boxes

Next logical question customers often ask is whether or not movers provide the boxes, which again depends on the service being offered. If the movers are going to do all the packing for you then it would be right to expect they would bring their own (often branded) boxes with them.

On the other hand, if it's a standard move where you will be doing your own packing then it makes more sense that you would purchase your own boxes in advance to pack up everything and be ready for the moving day, so the movers can arrive on time and concentrate on loading up the removals van.

Should I Disassemble Furniture myself before Moving

Now we get into the nitty-gritty of what this post is all about, should I the customer take apart that pesky piece of flatpack furniture that isn't going to fit down my tight spiral staircase (or whatever the situation is). Our advice would be, if you're a physically capable person and handy with a screwdriver then why not own it and take the thing apart at your leisure.

You could take a few photos as you begin to dismantle the furniture to help you remember where each bit goes for when you put it back together again in your new abode. The benefit of doing it yourself is you won't have to worry about how competent a mover is at carrying out the dismantling and reassembling task, as it's not always going to be part of the primary skill set of your average move, so why take the chance if you can diy it yourself.

Do Movers Disassemble Furniture

So here we go, the big question is.. will the movers take apart my furniture for me? Quite often yes they will, but it's really (really) important to check this with them at the time of booking. Many movers carry a basic toolkit with them for such tasks, but not all do. Some are experienced in dismantling furniture and happy to include some basic taking apart of items as part of the service, while others just don't want to get involved with that because it makes it difficult to estimate how long the job will take.

Some furniture dismantling is very complex and could end up taking more time than the move itself, so be up front with the mover company, explain exactly what you need doing and they will be able to advise if they can help and whether it might incur additional charges.

Do Movers assemble or reassemble furniture

Assuming you've got the movers to agree to take apart your furniture to enable it to be removed from the property and safely loaded on the van for transport, the next big question once you've got everything in your new home is whether the removal men are going to put it all the furniture back together again?

Normally you would expect yes, but imagine this scenario.. the move has taken much longer than expected (maybe because dismantling the furniture turned into a logistical nightmare) and now the mover team is running very late on their next job and coming under extreme pressure from their office or possibly an angry customer, so what are they going to do in that situation?

Most likely they're going to sheepishly ask you if you wouldn't mind putting it back together as they need to leave pronto, assuming you haven't paid extra for the dismantling and reassembling service of course, so worth bearing in mind.

Will Movers take apart beds and reassemble them

It's one thing taking apart an Ikea flatpack shelf, but quite another dismantling and then reassembling a large, complex and massively heavy oak double bed for example. Without the movers really knowing in advance what they are letting themselves in for by agreeing to undertake this kind of very large furniture dismantling service, it opens up the possibility of all kinds of problems, not least that you may not have a bed to sleep in once your big moving day is finally over.

That's not intended to scare you, and some movers are happy to take on all kinds of moving challenges, but think it through. You know your bed better than the movers and whether or not it's realistically going to be taken apart by a potential novice, so if in doubt look for an alternative way of taking it apart in advance if required.

Will movers take unwanted furniture to the dump?

The short answer for whether movers will dispose of your unwanted or scrap furniture and other items down the tip is usually no. This is not because they don't want to be helpful, it's because the days of a van just rocking up at the local dump to chuck an old sofa in a skip (for free) are long gone. Firstly disposing of furniture or any kind of waste is time consuming, full of regulations and also costs money which they would need to include on their charge. Long story short, is just not something 'most' movers will do any more.

If you need to dispose of unwanted furniture or anything else of that nature, you would be better off hiring separate waste disposal service. Just make sure whoever you hire is licensed for waste disposal (actually ask to see the licence) because by law you are responsible for your waste if they end up dumping it in a lay-by or somewhere similar. Don't have nightmares about it though, as the vast majority are going to provide a professional service, just do your due diligence and check them out.

Do Movers Disconnect Washer Dryers or Washing machines

This one is a bit more straight forward (although there's always the potential for unexpected plot twists) and most movers will happily disconnect and reconnect a washing machine and dryer. After all, it's only turning a plastic knob. But again, even though this is a basic task it's best to give the mover company a heads up at the time of booking just in case they prefer not to get involved in any kind of extra service of this nature.

And that's about it, hopefully you now have a better idea when it comes to movers undertaking such dismantling and reassembling jobs. Happy Moving!
